Donald Wayne Atkinson

Funeral services for Donald Wayne Atkinson 84 of Bowling Green will be Monday July 16, 2007 at 11:00 am at the Mudd-Veach Funeral Home with Lay Pastor Emily Smith officiating.  Private burial services will be in the Valley View Gardens Cemetery in Edwardsville, IL.  Visitation will be held Sunday from 4:00 – 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

He was born August 14, 1922 in Green County, IL., the son of Samuel Norman and Lillie Bell Vestal Atkinson.  He married Dellora H. Morthole in 1946 in Jacksonville, IL. and she preceded him in death in 1989.  He then married Iva Miller in 1989 in Edwardsville, IL. and she survives.  Also surviving are two sons Jim Atkinson and wife Carrie of Hawk Point, Jeff Atkinson and wife Laura of Fairfax, VA.; three daughters Donna Hiles and husband Dave of Glen Carbon, IL., Janis Shedenhelm and husband Bill of Millersville, PA.; Lisa Porter of Farmington; one step son David Miller, three step daughters Peggy Sandels, Penny Sparks and Patty Dickinson; 23 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren. 

He was raised in Woodson, IL.  He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the Illinois College in Jacksonville, Il..  He then served in the U. S. Navy where he attended the Naval Military Academy in Maryland and served his country in the Phillipines. He then taught high school math and physics in several Illinois communities.  He continued his education by getting his Masters Degree at University of Oklahoma in Norman, Ok.  He returned to Edwardsville, IL where he continued to teach until his retirement.  Upon marriage to Iva in 1989 he moved to Bowling Green. 

Mr. Atkinson was a member of the Providence Concord Presbyterian Church where he had  served as an Elder and a Sunday School Teacher.  He had been a member of the Masons, Eastern Star, Scottish Rite, VFW Post 5553, American Legion #370, and the Retired Teachers Association of Illinois.  He enjoyed playing his harmonica, singing and music of all kinds.  He also enjoyed watching and feeding birds and woodworking.
