William Richard "Bing" Edelen

William Richard “Bing” Edelen, age 63, of Bowling Green passed away Friday August 22, 2008 at the home of his sister, Joyce A. Scherder, in Bowling Green.

A memorial mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday August 30, 2008 at the St. Clement Catholic Church in St. Clement with Fr. Wayne Boyer officiating.

Born William Richard Edelen on May 3, 1945 in St. Louis, but known as “Bing” to his friends and family, he was the son of Henry Cecil Edelen and Jessie Mae Nichols.  He first married Nina Poston in 1966 in the state of Louisiana and together had two sons, Robert and Arthur.  He later married Kathleen Korte in 1972 at St. Clement and together had two daughters, Sandra and Tamara Lee.  In 1986 he married Sylvia Ogle Liebenthol in Kenai, Alaska who proceeds him in death. In 1998 he married Elizabeth Williams in Mexico and they later divorced.

Survivors include his two sons Arthur C. Edelen and James Robert Edelen and wife Joey all of Nikiski, Alaska; two daughters Sandra Renee Edelen Lamont and husband Brett of Bremen, Indiana., Tamara Lee Thielemier and husband Brad of Jefferson City; 14 grandchildren and one great granddaughter; three brothers H. C. “Bud” Edelen of New Hartford, James T. Edelen of Sun City, Arizona, and Dennis E. Mattingly of Anchorage, Alaska.; four sisters Virginia Morse and husband Richard of Bowling Green, Joyce A. Scherder and husband Harry of Bowling Green, Sue Uhlin and husband Steve of High Point, North Carolina, and Jeanne Bishop and husband Cliff of Kasilof, Alaska. He was preceded in death by his wife Sylvia Liebenthol Edelen, his brother Robert J. Edelen, his sister Toni DePietro and his parents Henry Cecil Edelen and Jessie Mae Nichols.

Bing attended school in Silex.  He enlisted in the army at the age of 18 and served his country for two years. He spent most of his career working in Alaska as a pipefitter/welder then a superintendent and foreman in the oil fields until his retirement.  Those who worked with him attest to his unmatched work ethic and tireless dedication to a job well done. Bing’s generosity knew no bounds. He was a member of the Shriners, Masonic Temple, Kenai Elks, Eagles, VFW, and was a frequent supporter of Little Sister of the Poor in St. Louis.  He was an avid and accomplished hunter and fisherman and was particularly fond of sharing these activities with his children and grandchildren.
