Phil was born May 19, 1942 to Edward and Louise Luebrecht Grote. He was united in marriage on July 9, 1966 to Linda Fern Roberts who survives.
He is survived by a daughter Christine Grote Meyer and husband Curt of Troy; one son Justin (Bueford) Grote and wife, Tabitha of Bowling Green; grandchildren Clayton and Carley Meyer of Troy; two brothers Vincent Grote and wife Vicki of Curryville; Dennis Grote of Bowling Green; two sisters Millie Millinder and husband Harry of Bowling Green; Ruthie Murray and husband Ed of Bowling Green; and many nieces and nephews.
His parents and an infant son Brian Keith Grote preceded him in death.
Phil was raised in the St. Clement area and attended St. Clement School. He graduated from Bowling Green High School. He also served in the Army Reserves. After the service, Phil began his career in construction with C. T. Wendel. After 12 years of construction, Phil then farmed with his brother Vince in Curryville. In 1991, Phil formed his own concrete company P. J. Construction, and was later joined by his son Justin who will continue the business.
He was a member of the St. Clement Catholic Church and the St. Clement Knights of Columbus where he was an active member for over 45 years. Since Phil received the State Knight of the Quarter in 1994, he has never stopped being a hard working community minded person. In 1995 Phil and a small group of fellow Knights of Columbus members had a dream to build a 50 X 100’ addition to the K of C Building. He and a few other members donated approximately 6 months of their time and talent to bring to completion a beautiful building which most enjoy on a regular basis. After completion, he was part of a small group that cleaned this building and maintained it all too on donated labor. He is still considered a part of the team and will be greatly missed by the St. Clement community and his many friends, relatives and co-workers.
Pallbearers will be Bob Tepen, Jim Tepen, Fred Tepen, George Tepen, Rich Tepen, Fred Niemeyer, Dick Grote, Charles “Buzz” Orf, Gerald Luebrecht and George Riley.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials be given to the St. Clement Knights of Columbus in honor of Phil’s endless hours of volunteer work.
